Is Rhinoplasty Right for You?
The best candidates for nose surgery have realistic expectations about what this procedure can achieve. By itself, rhinoplasty will not make you into a better person, and you should choose this surgery for your own personal reasons. If you have a healthy perspective about what you want to achieve, you are likely to be very happy with the outcome. Many of Dr. Buonassisi's patients wonder why they didn't choose to have your procedure sooner.
Many people who would be good candidates for rhinoplasty want to see what kind of results they can achieve. Getting a glimpse into the future is now possible through the computer imaging technology used by Dr. Buonassisi. During your private consultation, he can show you in real time how different changes to your nose will produce different results, and help you determine which changes will produce the results that best compliment your facial features.
Preparing for Your Procedure
Well before your procedure, request time away from work and start planning for several days of recovery. This includes having someone drive you to and from your procedure and stay with you at least for the first night to help you around the house during the initial phases of your recovery. If you think you will have particular needs in order to get ready for your procedure, talk with Dr. Buonassisi.
Your Vancouver, British Columbia Rhinoplasty
Nose surgery involves surgical modification of the anatomy of the nasal bones and cartilage to achieve a more attractive appearance. For patients who primarily want to improve the structures that make up the tip of the nose, Dr. Buonassisi can perform what is known as a "closed" rhinoplasty procedure that creates no external scarring. For dramatic improvements to the bridge or upper portions of the nose, an "open" procedure is often required. With this technique, Dr. Buonassisi makes a "v-shaped" incision along the columnella, the strip of skin that separates the nostrils. This incision allows him to more easily access the structures of the nasal tip, where he can revise the cartilage and bone before reattaching and suturing closed the columnella.
Vancouver rhinoplasty patients are placed under general anaesthesia to sleep comfortably through the procedure, which may take between 1 to 2 hours to perform. Dr. Buonassisi will explain in detail during your consultation exactly which surgical technique he recommends so that you understand what will happen during your procedure.
Recovering from Surgery
After rhinoplasty, you will be able to return home following a brief recovery period in the outpatient facility. You should experience only mild discomfort that can be controlled with an over-the-counter pain reliever. Dr. Buonassisi will provide detailed post-surgical instructions which you will need to follow closely to ensure your recovery goes as smoothly as possible. For instance, patients are required to keep their head elevated for the first 24 hours for proper drainage and to reduce swelling and bruising.
Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes are common after-effects, especially for the first few days following surgery. In addition to keeping the head elevated, it is also recommended to avoid strenuous activity. About a week after your surgery, you will return to the office so that Dr. Buonassisi can remove all dressings, splints, and sutures. At this point or soon after, you should look and feel good enough to head out to social events without feeling self-conscious about bruising and swelling.
Your Results
When performing rhinoplasty for Vancouver residents, Dr. Buonassisi's goal is the same every time: to create a more flattering appearance that compliments the rest of the patient's face and meets their cosmetic needs. His objective is not to completely transform the look of your face but instead to help you enhance your features while still retaining your own personal characteristics and ethnic heritage. Because rhinoplasty produces permanent changes, your newly shaped nose will continue to look attractive for years to come.
