Double Eyelid Surgery

Roughly 50% of people with Asian heritage are born with eyelids that do not have a crease. Some find that their eyes look "closed" and "puffy," or that they have a tired appearance that does not reflect the way they feel. While a creaseless lid is a beautiful Asian characteristic, many people desire a more open and rested look. They choose Dr. Buonassisi for a safe and effective double-eyelid surgery which he specially tailors to the unique features of the Asian face.

With this surgery, Dr. Buonassisi creates a permanent crease in the upper eyelid, and may remove excess skin and fat if necessary. The main benefit of this cosmetic eyelid surgery is to open the eye, better expose the eyelashes and reduce puffiness. This surgery is ideal for both young people who desire a crease, and older people who want the additional benefit of improving eyelid puffiness and sagging.

Contrary to popular belief, most people desiring double eyelid surgery are not looking to change their Asian features, rather they are looking for more open and smooth looking eyes. These patients choose Dr. Thomas Buonassisi, a board-certified facial plastic surgeon, for their Vancouver Asian blepharoplasty surgery.

People consider Asian blepharoplasty surgery for a range of reasons. Some find that their eyes look tired or puffy, unfairly giving the impression that they are stressed or unhappy. Women may experience difficulty applying eye shadow and makeup to areas of loose skin and wrinkling around the eyes. Others find that their eyes look too "closed," and they desire a more open and brighter appearance.

Achieve an open, brighter look with double-eyelid surgery

Most Asian patients are not looking to change their beautiful inherited features. They simply desire a more open and brighter look with more exposed eyelashes. Dr. Buonassisi performs double eyelid surgery, creating a natural looking crease that shows when the patient's eyes are open, but not when they are closed.

There are non-surgical approaches to creating a temporary crease in the eyelid, including the use of special glues and tapes. While these treatments can produce short-term results, they do come with some drawbacks. Many women find it difficult to apply makeup on top of the glue, while others find them to be sticky and uncomfortable. For those looking for a safe and permanent surgical option, double eyelid surgery may be a good choice. Choosing a qualified facial plastic surgeon is of paramount importance. Dr. Buonassisi performs Asian blepharoplasty surgery in Vancouver for patients of all ages to refresh their eye appearance.

Is Double Eyelid Surgery Right for You?

If you were born with eyelids that do not have a crease, or have crease asymmetry, and you are frustrated with the appearance of closed, puffy upper eyelids, you may be a good candidate for Asian blepharoplasty.

While double-eyelid surgery can create a crease and remove excess skin and fat from the upper eyelid, this surgery itself will not smooth out "crows' feet" wrinkles on the sides of the eyes or fully correct dark circles under the eyes. Dr. Buonassisi can talk with you about surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatments to address these concerns. Some patients choose to have lower blepharoplasty at the same time as their double-eyelid surgery. Be sure to also discuss with him any medical conditions or other aspects of your health history that may affect your eyes or the surrounding skin.

Preparing for Your Procedure

Most people have to do very little to prepare for their Asian blepharoplasty procedure. Preparation generally requires planning for your post-surgical needs.

Asian Blepharoplasty in Vancouver

By performing Asian blepharoplasty, Dr. Buonassisi is able to create a natural looking crease and remove excess skin and fat above the eyes, helping to create an open and refreshed look.

Blepharoplasty can improve the upper eyelid, lower lid, or both areas. To prepare for the surgery, Dr. Buonassisi marks the areas where incisions will be made, which follow natural lines and creases to avoid excess scarring. Often, lower eyelid surgery incisions can be made on the inside of the eyelid, so that visible scarring can be avoided completely. Through these incisions, excess fat and skin are removed and muscles may be surgically tightened before the incisions are closed with very fine sutures. On average, the procedure takes 1 to 2 hours to complete, with additional time needed if other facial rejuvenation surgery such as a face lift or brow lift is being performed at the same time.

Recovering from Surgery

When your eyelid surgery in Vancouver is complete, you will be cleared to head home to begin your recovery. After this procedure mild discomfort is normal, and can be managed through the use of over-the-counter pain medication.

To minimize swelling, be sure to keep your head elevated while you sleep for the first few days after surgery. Depending on the nature of your job and the amount of surgical correction you have received, you may be cleared to return to work in 2 to 3 days, though you may want to take a little longer to recover, especially if residual bruising remains. Almost all bruising and swelling should be gone within 10 days, and while normal activities can be resumed a few days after surgery, plan on taking 2 to 3 weeks off your regular exercise routine.

Your Results

Eyelid surgery is one of the most popular procedures performed by Dr. Buonassisi, and for good reason. This facial enhancement procedure can create an open, youthful look, while helping you look more rested and alert. The external scars hidden in skin creases and folds typically fade very quickly. Once fully recovered, most patients have no visible scars - only a refreshed eye appearance that can last for years to come.
