Blepharoplasty in Vancouver
Every year, thousands of Canadian men and women choose blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) in Vancouver, British Columbia to improve the appearance of their upper and lower eyelids. The main benefits of this cosmetic eyelid surgery are reduced puffiness and sagging, and a more rested and rejuvenated appearance. People consider blepharoplasty surgery for a range of reasons. Some find that their tired-looking eyes unfairly give the impression that they are stressed or unhappy. Women may experience difficulty applying eye shadow and makeup to areas of loose skin and wrinkling around the eyes. Others have a hereditary feature that causes a look of puffiness.
A good night's rest helps improve the look of the eyes, as does a daily skin care routine. However, people looking for a more effective and lasting result choose Dr. Thomas Buonassisi, board-certified facial plastic surgeon, for their Vancouver blepharoplasty surgery.
About Dr. Buonassisi
Board-Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon
A caring surgeon with a realistic view of his patients' goals,
Dr. Buonassisi has the skill to achieve cosmetic excellence.
Sagging upper eyelids and puffy or baggy lower lids can be caused by many factors - most often, age and heredity. Some people have a facial anatomy that is prone to an aged or worn out look around the eyes, while many others develop wrinkles and sagging over time. Others experience ageing of the eye area as a result of sun exposure. The fact is that as skin stretches, muscles weaken and fat accumulates on the upper and lower eyelids, the eyes may lose their youthful sparkle. Choosing a qualified facial plastic surgeon is of paramount importance. Dr. Buonassisi performs eyelid surgery in Vancouver for patients of all ages to refresh their eye appearance. He also performs double eyelid surgery for Asian patients who are looking for a naturally more open and brighter look with more exposed eyelashes.
Successful facial plastic surgery is a result of good rapport between the patient and Dr. Buonassisi. Dr. Buonassisi and his staff of caring professionals are committed to providing a relaxing and educational experience for their patients. Dr. Buonassisi performs computer imaging of the patient's photos, answers their specific questions and provides them with all the information they required to make an informed decision.

The Eyes Are Often Our Most Prominent Feature
As we age, the delicate eye area is often the first area of the face to show signs of ageing, including wrinkling, sagging and excess skin. Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Buonassisi uses blepharoplasty surgery to reduce the look of sagging skin on the upper eye lids and puffy or drooping pockets on the lower eye lids.

Is Eyelid Surgery Right for You?
If you are frustrated with upper or lower eyelids that appear droopy, puffy, or wrinkled, you may be a good candidate for blepharoplasty. Dr. Buonassisi also can perform "ethnic" eyelid surgery specially tailored to the unique features of the Asian face, creating an upper eyelid crease that opens up the eyes for a brighter appearance.
While lower eyelid surgery can remove bags and wrinkles below the eye, this surgery itself will not smooth out "crows' feet" wrinkles on the sides of the eyes or fully correct dark circles under the eyes. Dr. Buonassisi can talk with you about surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatments to address these concerns. Be sure to also discuss with him any medical conditions or other aspects of your health history that may affect your eyes or the surrounding skin.
Preparing for Your Procedure
Most people have to do very little to prepare for their blepharoplasty procedure. Preparation generally requires planning for your post-surgical needs.
- Because your vision will be affected and you may still be experiencing the effects of anaesthesia, you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for at least 24 hours to help around the house
- Stock up on food and other essentials so that you are able to relax comfortably at home for a few days
- Some blepharoplasty patients have trouble watching TV or using a computer, so you may want to get a few books on tape or gather up some of your favourite music
- Make sure you have a good pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from the elements when you are ready to head outdoors
Blepharoplasty in Vancouver
By performing blepharoplasty, Dr. Buonassisi is able to remove excess skin and fat above and below the eyes, helping to restore a refreshed look. In cases where the excess skin above the eye causes significant "hooding," eyelid surgery may be able to improve a patient's field of vision as well.
Blepharoplasty can improve the upper eyelid, lower lid, or both areas. To prepare for the surgery, Dr. Buonassisi marks the areas where incisions will be made, which follow natural lines and creases to avoid excess scarring. Often, lower eyelid surgery incisions can be made on the inside of the eyelid, so that visible scarring cab be avoided completely. Through these incisions, excess fat and skin are removed and muscles may be surgically tightened before the incisions are closed with very fine sutures. On average, the procedure takes 1 to 2 hours to complete, with additional time needed if other facial rejuvenation surgery such as a Vancouver, British Columbia face lift or brow lift is being performed at the same time.
Recovering from Surgery
When your eyelid surgery in Vancouver is complete, you will be cleared to head home to begin your recovery. After this procedure mild discomfort is normal, and can be managed through the use of over-the-counter pain medication.
To minimize swelling, be sure to keep your head elevated while you sleep for the first few days after surgery. Depending on the nature of your job and the amount of surgical correction you have received, you may be cleared to return to work in 2 to 3 days, though you may want to take a little longer to recover, especially if residual bruising remains. Almost all bruising and swelling should be gone within 10 days, and while normal activities can be resumed a few days after surgery, plan on taking 2 to 3 weeks off your regular exercise routine.
Your Results
Eyelid surgery is one of the most popular procedures performed by Dr. Buonassisi, and for good reason. This facial enhancement procedure can take years off your appearance while helping you look more rested and alert. The external scars hidden in skin creases and folds typically fade very quickly. Once fully recovered, most patients have no visible scars - only a refreshed eye appearance that can last for years to come.
